The Words Husbands and Wives Long to Hear Most

A marriage counselor once shared an insightful observation from years of working with couples.

He asked husbands,

"What is the one thing you most want to hear from your wife?"

Surprisingly, the answer he heard most often was,

"You always know how to handle things."

A man's confidence is not born merely from his abilities.

It grows when the person closest to him expresses trust in him.

Nothing gives him greater courage than knowing he is believed in.

He then asked wives,

"What is the one thing you most want to hear from your husband?"

Many answered,

"Please listen to me until I've finished."

What a wife longs for is not advice, nor a verdict.

She longs for someone who will simply listen to her heart with empathy, from beginning to end.

The bestselling book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, which explores the fundamental differences between men and women, puts it this way:

"When husbands receive unsolicited advice from their wives, they may conclude that their wives see them as incapable of solving problems on their own."

And it also reminds husbands:

"Do not judge your wife's words. Often, she simply wants to share the events of her day and the emotions she has carried within her."

In the end, what spouses desire most from one another is remarkably simple:

A husband longs to be trusted.

A wife longs to be understood.

Reflection of the Day

Both husbands and wives draw their greatest strength from being recognized, respected, and cherished by the person closest to their heart.
