Life, Too, Needs an Eraser

Just as there are sentences

we have written the wrong way,

there are years

we have lived the wrong way.

Not everything that seems solid

is forever unchanging,

and not everything that sways

is without meaning.

Just as there are sentences

we wish we had written differently,

there are seasons of life

we wish we could begin again.

        - From Eraser by Song Soon-tae

When we write, there are many sentences we wish we had written differently.

And as we go through life, there are many years we wish we had lived differently.

Sometimes we are betrayed by someone we trusted.

Sometimes we invest the savings of a lifetime in a misguided choice, only to lose everything in an instant.

Sometimes we let the years slip by, endlessly postponing the very thing we had longed most to do.

But having lived through years we regret does not mean that our entire life has been a mistake.

A poorly written sentence can be erased and written again.

A single failure is not the end of life; it is merely a comma, asking us to pause for a moment before continuing.

We cannot erase the years that have already passed,

but we can still write the years that remain.

What makes life beautiful is that, beyond the past we cannot erase,

there is still so much of the future left for us to write anew.
